Trying It: Paleo Diet

Yes, I have to admit, yep, I may have over indulged a bit too much this past holiday, and this past year...or two. It is sad to admit, but true that I have put on over 10 pounds since moving from DC to FL and now to London. You can guess that I am not too happy about this, nope, not so much. So after losing a few pounds, gaining a few pounds and back and forth, we got engaged, the holidays came and I thought, this is it, I must lose this weight. I kept reading about the Paleo diet around the web, especially here and here  and it got me thinking, a needed a major change, something to change my ways for the next year. I will admit I am that girl who has read articles "How to lose weight for the Wedding", "Fit Bride"...etc. etc. but after reading more into and adopting Paleo for a week, I'm feeling and hoping that this is it. I want to look good on our wedding day and every day moving forward, so I am ready to share my success {hoping for success, oh yaayyyy!}.

No Starbucks skinny vanilla latte? Sad! No yummy toastie sandwich for lunch? Sad. However, over this past week I have made it a real effort to cook for Beau and I to cook before the week and eat Paleo at work....no dairy, no sugar, no grains, yep all things I love! I have found it takes a little more planning, however, I have found amazing yummy recipes and understand the philosophy around it, its not a crazy crash site. So for all of you looking to change up your diet a bit, here a few of my favorite Paleo recipes so far and a few I'm ready to try! Happy cooking!

Minus the brown sugar, this recipe for Curried Sweet Potato Soup  looks absolutely amazing
for dinner during the chilly winter.

We made Venison Bourguignon from The Cavewoman Cafe last week and are throughout the week, it was amazing! We made it with lean venison and allowed it to simmer in the oven for a few hours allowing our house to smell delicious and the meat to melt in your mouth. Beau was funny and asked where the noodles, potatoes, rice or even bread was to dip into it, but was surprised on how filling it was without adding the extra carbs.

I read this recipe today after discovering it on Pinterest and thought....hmmm...this could be a Paleo dessert, no? I know that alcohol {hello RUM!} are not really included, but maybe for a little get together it could be a good alternative??? I am going to call it a treat! No additional sugar added, fresh coconut milk, delicious!

Southwest Shrimp Cakes, with Avocado! Yummy!

I am making this Chicken Curry dish tomorrow night for dinner on Tuesday. I do not have a crock pot, but found that slow cooking in my Le Creuset pot added the same cooking effect, just a little longer. I am craving curry these days, which I think has something to do with the yummy Indian restaurants in London, so I was psyched to find this recipe.

Beau and I both have a bit of a sweet tooth! I just found this recipe for Apple Pie Bars that I think I am going to make for this week and treat ourselves to them after our long runs this weekend.

Listen, I'm not saying I'm giving up eating bread and pasta forever, no way! However, for now, I think this is a great start to what I am looking to achieve and Beau is feeling super good, which is great.  Have you ever tried Paleo, any recipes and site recommendations?

  1. I've been hearing about the Paleo diet a lot, and a couple I am friends with have been doing it for 2 years and are in EXCELLENT shape. I've managed to get myself 20 lbs above my normal weight, but I am still struggling with the idea of giving up grains. I keep hoping I can just find a way to regulate my weight with "normal food," but it may just be time to bite the bullet and go Paleo.
